On The Edge

Creating the process for fabricating the sampling of edge profiles you see here was fun; from instructing step-by-step how they should be machined, to researching profile bits and cutting techniques for achieving the best quality profile.

This countertop made from Lumicor Java brings the semblance of the great northwest to the indoors; gloss finished edge full bull nose profile, UV sealed.

There is a first time for everything. This was a first for Lumicor, reverse wedge profile. To make things more interesting; this profile is hand machined in two steps, on a curved shape. Once the color is cut away, you can see the sparkle of the acrylic highlighted by the luminous color backed by chrome. The customer was thrilled with our sample and ordered a conference table with this elegant profile.

Using Lumicor Luminous with custom layers of color on both faces gives the appearance of added depth. When you machine dado’s revealing the clear acrylic you create 3-dimensional patters.

When the machined detail is offset, you create even more dimension by adding shades of color to the pattern.

Problem solving is one thing I really enjoy doing. The process of resolving design issues and guiding people through the process of accomplishing their design goals is very rewarding. This customer had a problem with the metal frame, it was fabricated too small to fit the decorative panel. We walked through how to machine a rabbet into the edges of the decorative panel on both faces creating a ‘tongue’ that would fit into the U-channel. We also produced a template that is used to mill out for the hardware knuckle.

Adding edgework and profiles to an already stunning product creates unlimited possibilities in design.

Bluwire

Illuminated displays’ showcasing the product is eye-catching.  I enjoyed working on the newest design incorporating more Lumicor Glacier Luminous in the store displays. The glowing details really get your attention and draw you into the store.

Though I cannot show complete CAD drawings on the internet (proprietary), hand sketches were used in the design phase of the project to coordinate design intent and fit equipment with the casework company.

The black television displays (right) are now behind glowing white cases. This lightens and softens the store façade without detracting from the ambiance.

The electronics display is comprised of Lumicor Glacier Luminous backed with Illume to soften the backlighting. The assembly of the fixture was made easy, seaming together the thermoformed face with inconspicuous rabbet joints in the top.

The POS at the back of the store is also fabricated with Lumicor Glacier Luminous with illume, thermoformed to the elliptical shape and seamed together. Once again the countertop is high-performance resin with chemical and antimicrobial resistance. The entire light box has a fully renewable surface finish. Assembly was coordinated with casework manufacturing company to ensure seamless installation and maintain design intent.

SketchUp!

SketchUp has changed my life. The ability to quickly and accurately create a 3D space is phenomenal. It is also lot of fun! I started with a Lumicor photo and only spent a couple of hours crating a 3D drawing from the 2D picture. Super easy!

I started with a photo of Lumicor product "Oasis" because of its unique combination of color and texture. This also adds an element of nature to the space.

Creating this full scale 3d model of the space from the 2D picture was quick, easy and fun.

I add the Lumicor décor as a texture, some color, and a few interior elements; and you have an excellent representation of the space.

I then added a little style for flair.

Fun At Work

This electronics retail store in the airport is one example of the many ways Lumicor Material can be utilized. It is beautiful, versatile, and can be cut and thermoformed into virtually any shape and use.

The illuminated component of the Point Of Sale (below) was constructed from ¾” Lumicor with a light defusing backer, thermoformed to shape and assembled with a rabbet joint. This also allows access to the lighting and electrical components for future maintenance. The countertop is high-performance resin with chemical and antimicrobial resistance. The entire light box and has a fully renewable surface finish. Assembly was coordinated with the casework manufacturing company to ensure seamless installation and maintain design intent.

The display dividers are 2” thick solid Lumicor Resin panels back-lit with a fully renewable surface finish. These panels add stunning detail to the display wall.

The face of this electronic display (below) is also composed of ¾” Lumicor with a light defusing backer, thermoformed to shape and assembled with a tongue-and-groove joint. This assembly is critical for two reasons. First tongue-and-groove is not typically used with acrylic because the joint is more visible with translucent material. Second, the “tongue” is fragile and can be broken unless care is taken during the assembly process.

Alignment is also particularly difficult because the material thickness can vary +/- 10%. As you can see from the pictures, the Assembly and installation went smoothly. This fixture face also has a fully renewable surface finish.

This dazzling back-lit countertop (below) is fabricated from high-performance resin to enhance chemical and anti-microbial resistance. It has a translucent light diffuser applied to the back of Lumicor panels to reduce hot spots and create a softer glow. The décor is Recycled Glass. The panels are embedded with glass aggregate that is 98%-100% recycled post-industrial content or post-consumer content. Each panel contains glass aggregate that comes from crushed bottles, plates, windows, and other recycled glass products. The Sushi bar is designed in four parts to be movable and stored away to suit any party capacity needed.

This decorative ceiling panel is symmetrical in shape, but can be installed in an infinite number of orientations creating flow while simultaneously breaking up the straight lines of the space. This inventive feature can be thermoformed from any number of Lumicor décors adding to the esthetic characteristics of the room. Brining natural elements into a room (in this case, green leaves) demonstrate the unique characteristics the Lumicor material lend to any design.

The Wave Panel can be aligned end-to-end to create a continuous rolling wave. The curved lines from the natural décor (cherry wood ribbon) as well as the formed shape of the ceiling feature, showcase the personality of this design detail. (Illustrated in the photo below) Adding this curled surface enhances the atmosphere of the space.
